Ransomware Poses a Threat to National Security, Report Warns

Government officials and cybersecurity experts are viewing ransomware as a serious threat to national security, and are proposing that the federal government go after ransomware gangs with the same tools used to prosecute drug cartels and other criminal organizations.

Escalating attacks on governments, school districts and healthcare organizations during the coronavirus pandemic demonstrate ransomware’s danger, said Philip Reiner, chief executive of the Institute for Security and Technology, a cybersecurity nonprofit.
